Fee Schedule for Cornell University Projects

Cornell University users and projects can take advantage of the services offered at CIMC on the fee basis shown below. Users outside of the Cornell community should inquire about service fees by contacting the center by e-mail at cimc-mailbox@cornell.edu.



Transmission Electron Microscopy Services


SAMPLE PREPARATION
  1. Negative Stain
    • Preparation of grids = $35/hour
    • Formvar / carbon coated grids = $2/grid
  2. Standard Thin Sections
    • Chemical Fixation, Dehydration & Embedding (21 blocks maximum) (choose one option)
      • Routine Samples:
        • 1st sample = $110
        • after 1st sample (submitted at the same time) = $30 ea.
      • Cell Culture or Particulates:
        • 1st sample = $175
        • after 1st sample (submitted at the same time) = $40 ea.
    • Sectioning
      • Thick sections = $12 / block
      • Thin sectioning & staining = $40 / block (minimum of 6 grids)
      • Additional thin sections OR sections of specific area of interest = $40 / hour
  3. Thin Sections with Immuno-gold Labeling
    • Chemical Fixation, Dehydration & Embedding (21 blocks maximum) (choose one option)
      • Routine Samples:
        • 1st sample = $110
        • after 1st sample (submitted at the same time) = $30 ea.
      • Cell Culture or Particulates:
        • 1st sample = $175
        • after 1st sample (submitted at the same time) = $40 ea.
    • Sectioning:
      • Thick sections = $12 / block
      • Thin sectioning + staining = $75 / block (minimum of 6 grids)
      • Extra grids = $75 for 10 grids
  4. Cryo Fixation with Standard Sectioning
    • High Pressure Freezing with Technical help & supplies = $200 / day
    • Freeze Substitution:
      • 1st sample = $175
      • after 1st sample (submitted at the same time) = $60 ea.
    • Sectioning:
      • Thicks = $12 / block
      • Thin sectioning & staining = $40 / block (minimum of 6 grids)
      • Additional thin sections OR sections of specific area of interest = $40 / hour
  5. Cryo Fixation with Cryo Sectioning (NOTE: This service not currently available.)
    • Plunge Freezing = hourly @ $35 / hour
    • Sections = hourly @ $40 / hour
    • Consumables (LN2) = $40 / day
  6. Freeze Fracture
    • With Technical help & supplies = $80 / run
MICROSCOPE USE
  • Standard viewing = $65 / hour
  • Cryo stage (for use with cryo sections only) = $?? / hour (NOTE: This service not currently available.)
IMAGING
  • Digital images to send/preview via email = $2 ea.
  • TEM negatives = $0.95 ea.
  • Negative Processing = hourly @ $35 / hour
  • Publication quality 5x7 prints of TEM negative = $8; additional prints of same negative = $3 ea.

SAMPLE PREPARATION
  1. Standard Mount of Dry / Hard Specimen
    • Mounting of samples on stubs = hourly @ $35 / hour
    • Sputter Coating = $15 / run
  2. Chemical Fixation
    • Chemical Fixation & Dehydration (choose one option)
      • Routine Samples:
        • 1st sample = $60
        • after 1st sample (submitted at the same time) = $30 ea.
      • Cell Culture or Particulates:
        • 1st sample = $85
        • after 1st sample (submitted at the same time) = $40 ea.
    • Critical Point Drying = $35 / run for Tech. help + $10 / run for consumables
    • Mounting of samples on stubs = hourly @ $35 / hour
    • Sputter Coating = $15 / run
  3. Cryo Fixation for Standard Viewing
    • Plunge Freezing = hourly @ $35 / hour
    • Freeze Drying = $5 / day
    • Mounting of samples on stubs = hourly @ $35 / hour

  4. Cryo Fixation for Use with Cryostage (choose one of two freezing options)
    • Plunge Freezing = hourly @ $35 / hour

MICROSCOPE USE

  • X-ray analysis of samples (optional) = $70 / hour
  • Cryostage operation with Technical help & supplies (for use with method "D" above) = $375 / day
IMAGING
  • Digital images to send/preview via email = $2 ea.
  • Video Prints = $0.25 ea.
  • SEM Polaroids (4"x5") Type 55 = $3 ea.
  • Publication quality 5x7 prints of SEM negative = $8; additional prints of same negative = $3 ea.

        • Thick sections = $20 / block for 1.0 um sections
        • Additional thick sections OR sections of specific area of interest = $40 / hour
MICROSCOPE USE
  • Standard viewing = $35 / hour
IMAGING
  • Customers should provide their own zip disk for image storage.


Training of Users: Training for using the equipment in the facility may be obtained through regular E.M. courses (Fall: BioG 403 for T.E.M., BioG 401 for S.E.M., Spring: BioG 401 for S.E.M.). Individual training is only occasionally available on an hourly fee basis as time allows. Training on ancillary equipment such as ultramicrotome, coaters, etc. will involve additional time.
